Growing Marijuana: What to Know

Although patient cultivation of medical marijuana plants is not yet legal in Mississippi, there is pending legislation which may pass. House Bill 1309 would allow patients to grow up to 6 plants at once in their residence.

This is great news for Mississippi residents! Not only is home cultivation fun and fulfilling, but it can also save you hundreds or thousands of dollars per year. Medical marijuana can get very expensive at dispensaries, and growing your own means no more dispensary visits!

Everyone should try growing once; just get one plant and see how it goes. It is a bit of work, but once you get the hang of it, it is actually pretty simple. Not to mention, many people say processing and trimming your own marijuana is therapeutic!

How to Cultivate Marijuana

The first thing you will need to consider is where you will be growing your supply: indoor or outdoor? There are pros and cons to both options, but most people do not have indoor space to grow plants.

You can always invest in a small greenhouse so you can still control the environment surrounding your plants, but where you want to grow your supply is up to you. Consider the fact that severe weather and marijuana plants do not mix well.

Another thing you should consider is if you will be planting straight into the ground or in pots, if you are growing outside, of course. You can control the growth of a potted plant more than you can control the growth of one in the ground.

You’ll need to select seeds and begin growing them. You can plant them inside until it gets a bit warmer and then move them outside if you want to. Make sure not to overwater, as this is one of the most common mistakes of new growers.

The Harvest

You will then need to harvest your plants. If you can do this before it starts to get frigid out, that would be best. You can cut the large leaves and branches and hang them up on a line in a cool, dry room with low humidity.

Your plant will then dry and you will be able to trim them shortly. Some people even cure them and stash them in jars. You should make sure your jars get air flow every so often by opening them up for about 15 minutes.
