How to Get Your Medical Marijuana Card in Mississippi

The wait is almost over for the patient residents of the Magnolia State. That’s right: the medical marijuana program is almost fully operational in the State of Mississippi!

Whether you are an aspiring patient, caregiver, practitioner or cultivator, applications are now being accepted and reviewed by the Mississippi State Department of Health! If you are hoping to open a dispensary, your application will go through the Mississippi Department of Revenue.

What Is the Timeline?

As previously mentioned, the Department of Health is now accepting applications for all aspects of the medical marijuana program.

Once a patient has applied for their medical marijuana card, there is generally a 5 day timeline for approval.

Even if you are approved tomorrow, there are no dispensaries currently operating in the State of Mississippi. Dispensaries are predicted to open in late 2022, which means marijuana products will start to become available at the same time.

What Is the Process?

The first thing you will want to do if you are interested in getting a Mississippi marijuana card is visit a medical professional that is participating in the medical cannabis program. The physician will then determine if you have a qualifying condition, and create a certification for medical cannabis use.

Within 60 days of your certification, you must register through the Department of Health’s Medical Cannabis online portal. You will need to set up an account with a valid email address, username, and password.

Then, you will need to select a starting application type. If you are a patient, you’ll want to choose “patient / caregiver / physician / work permit”. You can always add another application type later.

After that, you will get an email verification which will prompt you to confirm your registration. From there, you can officially start your application! You will be redirected to the Portal and asked to sign in with your username and password, create your application, and upload a photo.

If you have any questions about the application process, please contact MSMedicalCannabis@msdh.ms.gov.

After you apply, you must wait for your approval from the state. This will likely take about 5 days. It is also a good idea to check out Mississippi’s list of regulations currently in effect regarding medical cannabis.

Then What?

After you are approved, you will have to wait until products become available and dispensaries become operational.

Products are expected to become available towards the end of 2023. It’s important to have everything done before then, so you can be first in line to purchase your medicine.
