That’s right! As of July 1st, medical cannabis is officially legal in the Magnolia State! After years of patience, the wait is over.
The Medicinal Cannabis Act made this possible, which was signed into law back in February 2022. However, this does not mean that patients can access their medicine just yet.
Rather, what it means is that dispensaries can start getting ready to open their doors and start hiring staff.
Patients seeking medical marijuana will need to get a written certification from their doctors first. Then, they will have 60 days to submit an application to the Mississippi Department of Health.
If approved, patients will then be able to purchase their medicine for a year. Then they must renew their application.
Approved medical marijuana patients can legally purchase up to 3.5 grams of medicine in a day, which translates to about 3 ounces per month. The purchase limit was needed because without it, Governor Tate Reeves said he would veto the bill.
