Medical Marijuana vs Opioids

Bailey Porras

The debate over marijuana as a treatment for certain medical conditions has been changing and gaining momentum for many years. Some people are skeptical, because we are told to trust our doctors from the time we are born. Why would we do anything our long-time health practitioners would advise against?

There are countless misconceptions about medical marijuana, and most people simply do not know enough about it to make the switch from prescription drugs to cannabis.

Today, we will talk about the potential benefits a patient will enjoy when they decide to make the switch.

Shouldn’t We Listen to Big Pharma?

Although there are many doctors that fully back medical marijuana as a treatment for certain conditions, a majority are still turning a blind eye to its benefits. Why is this the case?

Simply put, Big Pharma profits off of sick people. Despite the plethora of medical studies that prove the benefits of cannabis, global pharmaceutical companies are still blocking legislative moves that would essentially legalize it.

If people switch from prescription drugs to medical marijuana, these giant corporations would face a sizable decline in profitability. This is one of the biggest reasons for the lack of support of medical marijuana from Big Pharma.

In a study conducted by the University of Georgia, it was concluded that opioid use is much less prevalent in states where medical marijuana is legal. And many studies have shown that drug abuse as well as overdose statistics are much lower in states that have legalized medical cannabis.

A survey conducted by the Center for Addictions Research of British Columbia concluded that 87% of participants gave up their prescription medication in favor of medical marijuana.

Pharmaceutical companies spend millions of dollars on research, quality control, testing, and product development, which is why the cost of prescriptions can add up rather quickly.

The cost of cultivation and distribution for marijuana is significantly less, which makes its retail prices much lower. It’s no wonder why Big Pharma doesn’t want medical cannabis as a competitor.

If you are considering asking your doctor whether medical marijuana may be right for you, just take his response with a grain of salt, and make sure to do your own research.

Benefits of Making the Switch

The leading cause of accidental death in the United States is prescription drug overdoses. This should come as no surprise, because everybody knows somebody who is on a prescription for something.

Switching to medical marijuana completely would eliminate the risk of fatal overdose and significantly reduces the possibility of becoming dependent on your medication.

Side effects with opioid consumption are found to be extraordinarily common. Between 50-80% of patients in clinical trials report that they experience at least one side effect from their medication.

Medicine is supposed to help you feel better and make your life easier. Receiving relief in exchange for discomfort and side effects should not be ideal. Some of the most common side effects of opioids can include sedation, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, physical dependence, tolerance, and respiratory depression.

Medical marijuana can aid in pain relief for a multitude of medical conditions, including chronic pain, depression, anxiety, and Crohn’s disease.

Marijuana has been used for its medicinal properties for thousands of years, and it’s all natural. Americans are becoming progressively concerned with what they are putting in their bodies every day and seeking out natural substitutes for certain foods, cosmetics, and more.

It should be no different when it comes to medication. Opioids can destroy your body over time and can even cause muscle and heart infections.

When a person becomes reliant on pain relief, it can quickly consume their life; adapting to side effects becomes second nature. This is not the path to be on!
