Are There Any Side Effects of Medical Marijuana?

During this down time, we want to be your go-to source of information for you on all things in the marijuana industry. Now that a program is around the corner, there are more and more questions popping up. One of them being, are there any side effects of medical marijuana?

This is a great question that can be answered simply! Yes, just like with any medication, there can be side effects that come along with using medical marijuana.

Instead of asking yourself if there are side effects, you should instead ask yourself if you can handle them better than the side effects of traditional prescription medications. For our patients the answer to this new question is a resounding “yes”!

What are the main side effects of medical marijuana?

Dry mouth

One of the first things you will notice after your first time medicating is that you could feel dehydrated aka you could have dry mouth. THC is the culprit of this side effect but not to worry this can be managed easily!

One trick that those in the medical marijuana community use to keep dry mouth at bay is to suck on hardy candy or a sucker while medicating. This will help trigger your salivary glands so that your mouth doesn’t feel so dry. You also should keep a big glass of water nearby so you can stay on top of the dehydration too!

The munchies

I am sure you have heard of the munchies before! This side effect makes you feel hungry and again THC is to blame for this one.

THC binds to many receptors in the body including the receptors for smell and taste. This is what makes you feel like you have an empty stomach!

If you are trying to avoid the empty stomach side effect you should look for products that either are high in CBD or have a more balanced CBD to THC ratio. A well balanced product will help with the munchies because CBD is actually a buffer of the side effects that can come with THC!

Red Eyes

Zombie red eyes are one of the most obvious side effects that can come with using medical marijuana treatment. Many of our patients like to keep their marijuana medication private so while red eyes aren’t harmful at all, they can be a bit embarrassing since they are a dead give away that you have been using marijuana.

Not to worry! This one can be managed too! You can try using CBD products, balance THC:CBD products or buy over the counter eye drops that will help the redness go down.

Things to Think About. . .

There are a couple things to remember when it comes to the side effects of medical marijuana.

First, know that everyone is different. This means that medical marijuana affects everyone differently too. What is a side effect for one person, may not be the same side effect for another.

Two, what one person considers a side effect can be another person’s therapy. Let’s take the munchies for example. You may try to avoid having an empty stomach when medicating since you have a healthy appetite throughout the day. Someone dealing with HIV/AIDS or going through chemotherapy treatment may be using medical marijuana for that exact reason.

All you need to do is keep an open and honest line of communication with your doctor. They are there to help you find which strains and products are right for you!
